Moon Magic; the great mother moon

Often called ‘The Great Mother Moon’, the silvery orb in the night sky is a strong mother archetype that we can call upon for guidance and direction, and whose essence we can ‘draw down’ to earth for wisdom, healing, inspiration, balance...and magic.

Magically speaking, there are nine lunar phases that make up a full lunar cycle: dark, new (waxing crescent), first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent and back to the dark moon again. The moon and her phases can help you with your creativity, fertility, business, romance, friendships, abundance, health and so much more. She does this by guiding your actions and moods with her phases from light to dark, and action to stillness…and when you also work with her correspondences in your magic, such as the astrological sign, element, mansion, etc. associated with the moon at the time of your workings you strengthen your magic. If you choose to use the moon as an indicator of when to be in action and when to be still, when to gather and when to release, you will find—quite quickly, that your life is flowing much more easily than ever before.

What is magic? Technically speaking, it is the ability to change the physical world using non-physical means, but let’s go a bit deeper. Magic is the natural and innate ability that you have to gather towards you all of the subtle, unseen forces of the universe and use them to affect your path in life, the wellbeing of your body, the will of your mind and the depth of your emotions—and often to affect the outcome of most circumstances. Whenever I am working magically, I can feel the energies moving through me, as me. I can feel the flow of nature, the power of the universe and the essence of the planets—most especially the moon, flowing down from above.

One of the most traditional ways to practice magic is to cast a ‘spell’, which is a form of prayer, intention and focus. A spell is usually written, but it can also simply be something that is said aloud with intention, such as when we say ‘And, so it is’, and it can be both written and spoken aloud for even more power.

Traditionally, spells requires a very clear objective, an object to focus your intention and energy (such as a candle, crystal or the objective itself), the empowerment of the spell, which is the energy that you will be gathering towards you, through you and into the spell, a ritual that you will perform to gather energy, and finally the release of the energy to the Universe. I always make sure to express gratitude during the releasing of energy. I also suggest creating an altar space, even a temporary one to perform your magic.

 Earth Moon Magic

When the moon travels through the zodiac signs of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn she is aligned with their qualities of earth, which has to do with calm, grounded, organized activities and nurturing and emotional experiences. This can also be a time of feeling very private and protective as well feeling the need to control situations and projects.

  • Practice lunar rituals for health, the body, security, calming and nurturing during this time.

Air Moon Magic

When the moon travels through the zodiac signs of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius she is aligned with their qualities of air, which has to do with the intellect, the gathering, processing and sharing of information and also for dealing with your own personal emotions.

  • Use this time to express your emotions, research, study, write, read and practice lunar magic for success in all intellectual and emotional endeavors.

Fire Moon Magic

When the moon travels through the zodiac signs of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, she is aligned with their qualities of fire, which has to do with creativity, sexuality and passion. Fire is both creative and destructive, so when you use this time for creative expression be aware that you may ‘burn’ through projects and ideas quite quickly. But worry not; more are on the way. This is also a good time to explore your sexuality and passion; however you may experience abrupt endings of relationships—especially those with predominantly physical connections, as this moon inspires you to seek much deeper connections.

  • Practice lunar rituals for sex, passion, creativity, and letting go of superficial relationships or attracting deeper relationships during this time.

Water Moon Magic

When the moon travels through the zodiac signs of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, she is aligned with their qualities of water, which has to do with emotions, feeling, and expression. Water is cleansing, purifying, flowing, transformative, nurturing, and sustaining. It infuses this moon with caring and tenderness. This is a good time for releasing grief, sadness, hurt, and other painful emotions, and is also a time for seeking guidance, assistance, and support.

  • Practice lunar rituals for cleansing, releasing, flowing, healing, emotions, passage, letting go of resentments and grudges.

Wishing you great success & much joy in your lunar magical workings!
