Moon Magic, Talismans and Amulets

Here in Southwest Wisconsin where I am now living, the gray cold days and even colder dark nights are bringing my attention more and more towards all things inward. This inwardness is reflected in my thirst to go deeper with my magical workings, deeper into sourcing the most ancient, and most esoteric of wisdoms, resurfacing just long enough to catch my breath, and then delight in my files now laden with new mystical treasures.

Sometimes just the seeking of these ancient wisdoms is where I could stay forever, but then I remember that using this precious wisdom is where all the fun truly is. And lately I find my mind wandering through the magic of talismans and amulets, and how much I love to use them with the moon.

A talisman is an item, such as a crystal, gemstone, rune, ogham, dreamcatcher, a knotted cord, a piece of jewelry or piece of paper with special, meaningful symbols that has been created to energetically focus and amplify power. This power of a talisman is in its ability to aid you in achieving the goal that you desire. Talismans have been used by almost every culture on earth, and you can explore using their symbolisms when making one for the moon.

A talisman is both focusing and amplifying, helping you to gather and hone your feelings and emotions towards the most helpful and supportive thoughts for a specific outcome. It then helps to focus those thoughts towards performing the most supportive actions that are best for you to take. It then focuses those actions, helping you to create deeply rooted, positive habits that will support your goal. And it is through these new, positive habits that your desired outcome is achieved. It is important to align your thoughts, feelings, and emotions when working with manifestation…if even one of those components is out of alignment with the others, your magical intention may fail.

Talismans are very powerful tools, and should be respected as such. Even a small slip of paper, with just one symbol or word written upon it, created at just the right hour, on the perfect day and under the best celestial alignment can help you to manifest the most enormous task. The reason for this is, that as an amplifier, talismans allow you to merge with the energies of the universe, the Universal Life Force of everything in the cosmos, and the Life Force of all things.

An amulet is a special talisman that is specifically designed and used for protection, and also for defense. Over time the word amulet became synonymous with charm, and so oftentimes we hear of jewelry pendants referred to as amulets. Some crystals can be used as an amulet, such as black tourmaline or clear quartz, as they can easily be programed to focus their crystalline essence and power to protect you.

There are several steps to follow when creating a talisman or amulet. They are:

  • Choose your intention

  • Choose the best day to craft your talisman or amulet on

  • Choose the best hour to craft your talisman or amulet during

  • Choose the best celestial body to infuse and align your talisman with

  • Charge your talisman or amulet with power

  • Bless your talisman or amulet with love, light and Goddess essence

I carry my talismans in a small velvet bag, but any kind of fabric, a small envelope or box will do just as nicely. I also encourage you to experiment with making a talisman, and/or amulet with river and ocean rocks, runes, crystals and other objects—remember to be creative.

Once I have charged and blessed a talisman, and put it into a small cloth bag, I then do something that is often difficult for some of us; I leave it alone. And, I mean, really, truly leave it alone. I actually often forget about it! Then, after my wish, desire or prayer has been manifested, I destroy or dispose of the talisman with as much reverence and ritual that I used to create it.

You may wish to fold it up and carry it with you in your purse or pocket—and you can also use this moon talisman to charge your crystals, incense, or oil blends and any other magical object or ritual, by placing the item on the talisman. Try writing an affirmation, or wish upon it, and then burn the talisman in a fire-safe bowl, and scatter the ashes, releasing them—and your intentions to the universe, and then wait one full moon cycle for it to manifest.

I hope that you will try your hand at creating a lunar talisman or amulet…and if you do, please send me an image of it, or visit my website to join my Facebook group and then share it there; just click the logo at the end of this email to be taken to my site.
