Winter Magic
We are soon approaching the Winter Solstice, and The New Year, and now is a good time to prepare for all of your winter season rituals.
Winter is the season of midnight, and it is associated with the dark, still moon, and the archetype of The Goddess as the wise-woman, the crone, the dark mother, the elder, and the wild witch living at the hedge. It is also associated with death, dying, and the portal-place of endings and beginnings.
The magic of the winter season is for working with the dark moon, the star sign of Capricorn, dark crystals, gnarled roots, and wise, grandmother goddesses as we go deep within to cast spells and wishes for the coming year, and craft dark, mysterious potions.
Here are some ritual practices that I have excerpted from the Winter Wisdom Guide collection, which you can purchase below.
Winter Oracle
From December 28 through 12 January 12, work with rune that is called Eoh and its aspects intuition, communication with the spirit realms, light in the darkness, eternity, renewal, rebirth, and awakening. This rune’s message for January is to awaken from the dream, begin to walk upon the earth in a new way, which is consciously, powerfully and with reverence.
From January 13, through January 27 we work with rune that is called Peorth, and its aspects of our destiny, the hidden forces at work in the world, beginnings, fresh starts and the initiation of the soul, the heart and the life. This rune’s message for January is to see beyond the illusion, awaken and emerge with clarity, with understanding and with purpose.
Winter Plant Magic
The Bay Laurel Tree yields lovely, aromatic leaves that are used for the magic of clairvoyance, wisdom, prophetic dreams and visions. Bay leaf can ward off negativity, and is an excellent plant for protection magic, and the essential oil can be used to anoint candles, and magical/ritual tools to cleanse and protect them. An ancient spell calls for using a dried, flat bay leaf to write your wishes on, holding the leaf between your palms to infuse with your heart’s desire, and then burning the leaf to send your wishes into the upper, spirit realms by way of the sweetly scented smoke from the burning leaf. Use bay leaf to write your Winter Solstice blessings, and your New Year's wishes, then burn the leaves to activate them. Let the ashes scatter in the wind.
